How to start dropshipping: a 7-step plan with real numbers
By the editorial team · Updated · 15 min read
To start dropshipping, you pick a niche, validate one product with hard numbers, order a sample, build a simple store with its legal pages, register your business, then run a small, capped ad test and decide from the data whether to cut or continue. Done seriously, a first test costs roughly $200 to $700 in the US, and most of that is advertising. If the model itself is still fuzzy, start with what dropshipping is and how the money flows, then come back here.
Most guides stop at "find a supplier, build a store, market it". This one gives you the thresholds, the budget and the decision rules for each step, in the order you'll actually meet them.
Step 1: Choose a market and a niche
Before the niche comes the market: who you sell to and where they live. It decides your delivery times, your taxes, your ad costs and the language of your store. For a US-based beginner, the simplest choice is selling to US customers: one currency, one set of consumer rules, and suppliers with US warehouses are easy to find.
Then pick a niche. A good beginner niche has three traits:
- A clear buyer with a recurring problem. "Dog owners whose dog pulls on the leash" beats "pet products".
- Products you can show in a 15-second video. Paid social ads sell what can be demonstrated. A product whose benefit is invisible is hard to advertise.
- No heavy regulation. Skip supplements, cosmetics with medical claims, electronics that need certification, anything for babies under 3 and anything branded. These carry legal risk you can't absorb yet.
Write down five niches, then spend 20 minutes on each in Google Trends and the Meta Ad Library. Keep the two where you find active advertisers and stable or rising interest. Your store type follows from this choice: a niche store is the easiest to make credible when you start.
Step 2: Find and validate a product with numbers
This is where beginners lose the most money: they fall in love with a product before checking whether it can pay for its own advertising. Use this grid and reject any product that fails one line.
| Criterion | What to check | Pass mark |
|---|---|---|
| Demand | Google Trends over 12 months; Meta Ad Library | Stable or rising curve, and several advertisers running ads on it for 2+ weeks |
| Gross margin | (price − product − shipping − payment fees) ÷ price | 30% minimum, aim for 60% or more |
| Price point | Retail price | Roughly $25 to $80: enough room for ad costs, low enough for an impulse buy |
| Competition | Search the product on Amazon and on Meta | You can offer something the top sellers don't: better angle, bundle, faster delivery |
| Shipping | Supplier's warehouse and carrier | A delivery time you can state honestly and meet |
| Risk | Brand, patents, fragility, certification | No trademark, not fragile, no regulated claim |
Thirty percent is a floor, not a target. Below it, advertising eats everything. The number that matters most is your break-even cost per acquisition (CPA): the most you can pay in ads for one sale without losing money.
Selling price $39.99
Product + shipping from supplier − $12.00
Payment fees (2.9% + $0.30) − $1.46
Break-even CPA $26.53 (gross margin 66%)
If you can't picture getting a sale for less than $26 in ad spend, the product doesn't work at that price. Raise the price, bundle two units, or move on. Our full method is in how to find a winning product.
If you want a shortcut for this step, the Dropshipping Hero app follows exactly this path in five steps, about five minutes a day, with products already scored on demand, margin and competition.
Step 3: Order a sample and choose your supplier
Never sell a product you haven't held. A sample costs you one product plus shipping, often in the $15 to $40 range, and tells you four things no listing will:
- Real delivery time to your address, counted from payment to your door.
- Real quality: materials, smell, finish, whether it matches the photos.
- Packaging: will a customer feel cheated when they open it?
- Content: you can shoot your own videos and photos, which beat supplier images in ads.
Order from two or three suppliers at once and compare. For AliExpress, check the store's age, rating, number of orders and response time before paying, and message the seller to see how fast and how clearly they answer. If your customers are in the US, compare with suppliers that ship from US warehouses in our list of US dropshipping suppliers.
One 2025–2026 change you must price in. Since August 29, 2025, no shipment entering the United States clears duty-free for being worth $800 or less, and in June 2026 CBP made that suspension indefinite in its regulations. Parcels from overseas suppliers now go through a formal or informal entry, with duties. Ask every supplier, in writing: are duties included in the shipping price (DDP), and who pays if the parcel is held? Add the answer to your product cost before you calculate your margin.
Step 4: Build your store, its legal pages and its payments
The platform
Shopify is the default for a reason: it connects to most dropshipping apps and handles checkout well. As of September 26, 2026, its Basic plan costs $39 a month billed monthly or $29 a month billed yearly, and new accounts get 3 free days then $1 a month for 3 months. That intro offer is the cheapest honest way to build and test.
Keep the first version small: a home page, one to five product pages, and the pages below. A product page needs a clear promise in the headline, your own photos or video from the sample, a benefits list, the real delivery window, the return policy, and an FAQ.
The legal pages
Publish these before your first ad, not after your first complaint:
- Shipping policy with your real delivery window. Under the FTC's Mail, Internet or Telephone Order Merchandise Rule, you must have a reasonable basis for any shipping time you state, ship within 30 days if you state none, and offer the customer the option to cancel with a prompt refund when you can't ship on time.
- Refund and return policy: who pays return shipping, within how many days.
- Privacy policy and terms of service.
- Contact page with a real email address.
Our dropshipping legal compliance checklist goes through each page in detail.
Payments
Activate Shopify Payments (2.9% + 30 cents per online card payment on Basic) and add PayPal, which many buyers trust on an unknown store. Test a full order yourself with a real card, then refund it: it's the only way to be sure checkout, emails and order sync all work.
Step 5: Register your business and handle taxes
This section is short on purpose: the rules depend on your state, and the details are in our article is dropshipping legal?.
- Sole proprietorship. According to the SBA, you're automatically a sole proprietor if you do business without registering as anything else. It costs nothing, but your personal assets aren't separated from the business's debts.
- LLC. It separates your personal assets from the business. Each state charges its own filing fee, and the amount varies widely.
- EIN. Free from the IRS online, issued in minutes. Never pay a website for one.
- Income tax. As a sole proprietor or single-member LLC, you generally report profit on your personal return and pay self-employment tax on it.
- Sales tax. Each state sets its own rules and thresholds for when a remote seller must collect. Turn on your platform's tax settings and check the states where you sell the most.
Open a separate bank account from day one. Mixing business and personal money is the fastest way to lose track of whether you're actually profitable.
Step 6: Run your first ad test, then decide
A realistic test budget
Meta says an ad set leaves its learning phase after about 50 optimization events. At a $20 CPA, that's $1,000 a week: out of reach for a first test. So be clear-eyed: with a small budget, you're not "optimizing a campaign", you're checking whether a product gets any traction at all. Set your budget accordingly:
- $20 to $30 a day, one campaign, one ad set, 3 to 5 creatives (videos from your sample).
- 5 to 7 days per product, so $150 to $250 per product.
- Budget to test 2 to 3 products before judging yourself. The first one usually fails.
Install the Meta pixel (or the Shopify integration) and place a test order before spending a dollar. Without tracking, you're paying for data you can't see.
Read the numbers in order
Don't look at profit first. Look at where the funnel breaks:
| What you see | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Few clicks | The ad or the product doesn't stop the scroll | Test new hooks; if nothing moves, change product |
| Clicks, few add-to-carts | The page or the price doesn't convince | Rework the headline, photos, offer |
| Add-to-carts, few purchases | Friction at checkout | Check shipping costs shown late, delivery time, trust |
| Purchases above break-even CPA | Close, but not viable yet | Improve the offer (bundle, price) before scaling |
The decision rule
Write it down before you launch, so you don't negotiate with yourself later:
- Cut an ad set that has spent about twice your break-even CPA with no purchase.
- Continue when your CPA is at or below break-even over several days.
- Scale slowly: raise the budget by 20% at most every two or three days. Large jumps reset the learning phase.
Mistakes at this stage are expensive and predictable. Read the 7 beginner mistakes before your first launch.
Step 7: Customer service and delivery times
Customer service is part of the product. In dropshipping, most problems come from one source: a parcel that takes longer than the customer expected.
- Announce the real window measured with your sample, not the supplier's best case. A customer told "8 to 14 days" who receives it on day 12 is happy; one told "fast shipping" is not.
- Send tracking automatically as soon as the supplier ships.
- Answer within 24 hours, including weekends at first. Ready-made answers for "where is my order", "it's broken" and "I want a refund" save hours.
- Refund quickly when in doubt. A $30 refund costs less than a chargeback, the fees that come with it, and a warning from your payment provider.
- Track your refund rate per product. If it climbs, the problem is the product or the promise, not the customers.
Starting dropshipping from the UK
The seven steps are the same in the UK. What changes is step 5 (registration and tax) and the cost of importing. Here is how to start dropshipping in the UK, with the rules as GOV.UK states them in September 2026:
| Topic | UK rule | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| Sole trader registration | You must register for Self Assessment as a sole trader if you earn more than £1,000 from self-employment in a tax year (6 April to 5 April) | You can start testing right away; register with HMRC once you pass £1,000 |
| VAT registration | You must register for VAT if your taxable turnover over the last 12 months goes over £90,000 | Most beginners are below it; track your rolling 12-month turnover |
| Parcels worth £135 or less sent from overseas | The seller must charge UK VAT at the point of sale; no customs duty on non-excise goods | An overseas supplier selling to your UK customer has UK VAT obligations; check who is the seller of record |
| Parcels over £135 | Import VAT and customs duty are paid at import; rates depend on the product and origin | Your customer may get a bill from the courier: say so, or import yourself |
| Overseas businesses | A business based outside the UK must register for VAT whatever its turnover if it supplies goods in the UK | If you run your store from outside the UK, the £90,000 threshold does not apply to you |
| Coming change | The customs duty relief on goods worth £135 or less will be removed by October 2028 at the latest | Build duties into your prices now if you rely on low-value imports |
Three practical consequences:
- Prefer suppliers with UK or EU stock for UK customers. Delivery is faster and you avoid surprise import charges on orders above £135.
- Show prices including VAT once you are VAT registered, because UK consumers expect the price they see to be the price they pay.
- UK consumer law gives online buyers a right to cancel most purchases within 14 days of delivery: write it into your refund policy (see our compliance checklist).
This is general information, not tax advice. For your situation, check with HMRC or an accountant.

For the domain, Verisign's wholesale price for a .com is $10.26 a year and rises to $10.97 on November 1, 2026. Registrars add their margin on top, so check the renewal price, not just the first-year price.
Starting with no money: what's possible, what isn't
What's possible for almost nothing:
- Learning the model, the math and the ad tools.
- Researching products with free tools and validating them on paper.
- Building the store during the trial and the $1 months.
- Organic content on TikTok, Instagram Reels or YouTube Shorts: free, but slow and unpredictable. It can bring first sales; it rarely brings steady ones.
What isn't possible:
- Paid ads without a budget. Paid traffic is how most stores get their first buyers, and it costs money before it makes any.
- Selling without a sample without taking a real risk on quality and delivery.
- Skipping business registration once you're actually selling.
The honest version of "dropshipping with no money": you can prepare everything for under $10, then save $150 to $250 for a single, well-run product test. Expect that first budget to buy information, not profit.
Frequently asked questions
How much money do I need to start dropshipping?
About $170 to $200 for a bare-minimum test of one product in the US, and $600 to $950 to test two or three products in comfortable conditions. Most of it is ad spend.
Can I start dropshipping with no money?
You can learn, research and build your store for a few dollars thanks to Shopify's trial. You can't run paid ads without a budget, and organic traffic alone is slow. Plan to save $150 to $250 before your first real test.
Do I need an LLC to start dropshipping?
No. You're a sole proprietor by default when you start selling. An LLC separates your personal assets from the business and is worth considering once you have regular sales. Either way, you report the income.
Is dropshipping still profitable in 2026?
It can be, for a minority of sellers who test methodically and control their CPA. The end of the $800 de minimis exemption has raised costs for products shipped from overseas, which makes margin checks and US-warehouse suppliers more important than before. We look at the evidence in detail in is dropshipping dead?.
How long until the first sale?
It depends on the product and the budget, not on how many hours you put in. With a well-validated product and a working pixel, a paid test usually tells you within a week whether people buy. Several products may fail before one works.
How do I start dropshipping in the UK?
Follow the same seven steps, then register with HMRC for Self Assessment once your self-employment income passes £1,000 in a tax year, and for VAT if your turnover passes £90,000 over 12 months. Prefer suppliers with UK or EU stock. The section "Starting dropshipping from the UK" above has the details.
Do I need Shopify?
No. WooCommerce, Wix or other platforms work. Shopify is the most common choice because most dropshipping apps are built for it and its intro offer makes testing cheap.
